As recent current events have unfolded, the discussion around domestic violence – and what can be done to put an end to it – has never been more important.

At Verizon, we’ve been engaged with preventing domestic violence since 1995 when we launched the HopeLine program, which uses the proceeds from recycling and reusing old wireless phones to benefit women’s shelters and other victims’ organizations. One such organization is WINGS (Women in Need Growing Stronger) in Chicago.

More Than a Decade of Support
Verizon has been a major supporter of WINGS’ efforts for more than a decade and continues to support the organization in its latest efforts – building Chicago’s first domestic violence shelter in more than 10 years.

The new shelter, WINGS Metro, will provide 40 beds in a suite-based design to allow for privacy and healing. Support services will also be provided to victims to help ensure stable health, employment and enrichment.

Verizon is supporting this new facility with a $250,000 donation – its largest pledge to date to a nonprofit in Illinois.

“We are proud to be able to provide this financial support and look forward to having other businesses in Chicago’s corporate community join us in this worthy cause,” said Chris Baron, area president, Verizon Wireless. “Domestic violence knows no boundaries and preys on both the communities where we all do business and on our workforces.”

The Chicago Police Department receives an average of 500 domestic violence calls each day. WINGS Metro, scheduled for completion in the winter of 2015, will serve as a much-needed resource in a densely populated area.

Do Your Part: ‘Because Voices Have Power’
Through Hopeline, Verizon launched “Because Voices Have Power,” a national campaign designed to increase domestic violence awareness and provide a platform for the public to send messages of hope to victims and survivors. For each message of hope shared, we have committed to donating $3 to local and national domestic violence prevention organizations across the country.
