Verizon Webmail is a full-featured application that allows you to send, receive, and manage your email from anywhere on the web. Unlike conventional webmail applications, Verizon Webmail allows you to quickly sort messages, and re-organize them with the ease of drag and drop, all within one easy-to-use screen.
Verizon Webmail is a full-featured mail application that also includes an integrated contacts application. Verizon Webmail and Contacts are presented in separate windows on the Verizon Online Webtop. The default arrangement of the windows is with Mail open and Contacts docked. To open Contacts, click the Contacts button in the Dock located in the upper right corner of the Webtop. Mail will always expand to use the available space on the Webtop. Opening Contacts will cause Mail to resize to make room. By default Contacts will open to the left of Mail. Contacts can be placed on either side of Mail. Drag either window to the desired location and the other window will move over to make room. You can dock a window by clicking on the dock icon in the upper right corner of the window.
The Dock provides top level controls for the Contacts and Mail applications. This is where you can dock, or put away, an application, or a message in the case of Mail, and bring it back quickly to your main screen.
The initial Verizon Webmail screen has three main panels:
To increase or decrease the size of a panel, click the bar that separates it from its neighbor and adjust the size using the mouse. The size will remain as you set it until you resize it again.
You can navigate through the application using the mouse or by using the keyboard:
Many common actions are accessible via the right mouse button or contextual menu option. The context menu contents vary depending on where the menu is invoked. Note that the message list also includes an option not available anywhere else � Mark As Read. Mark As Read and Mark As Unread can be used on single messages, or groups of messages.
The message list is a scrolling list which displays summary information about messages in the currently selected folder. Verizon Webmail works differently than a traditional Web mail application - you do not need to specify the number of messages per page or mark a checkbox next to a message in order to perform an action such as delete. The default number of messages displayed is only limited by the size of your screen. Scroll down the inbox to preview more messages.
The Message list contains the following list of columns:
The width of the From, Subject, Date and Size columns in the message list are resizable by dragging the column divider. The messages may be sorted by specific attributes, such as date, by clicking on the column header. Clicking the column header again will toggle between ascending and descending order.
Moving messages is as easy as drag and drop. Select the message you would like to move by clicking on it in the message list and drag it to the folder where you would like to store it. Drop the message by releasing the mouse button.
You may select individual messages, a block of multiple messages next to one another or a number of separate messages.

Unread messages appear in the Message List in bold text with a closed envelope status icon. Once read they are no longer bold and their status icon changes to an opened envelope.
The preview panel displays the contents of the currently selected mail message.
On the top right of the preview panel there is a button to quickly add a contact. You can also resize this panel as you can the others by clicking on the bar that separates it from its neighbors, as described above.
Clicking the small arrow next to the Subject line will reveal more detailed information about the message, such as its To and Cc headers.
The Options selector allows you to control the amount of information that is presented for any mail message:
Verizon Webmail provides the ability to search the To, CC, From, and Subject fields of messages. Search is located to in the top left panel above the Mail folder list. Enter in your search criteria and click the search button. The results from your search will be displayed ina new temporary folder called Search Results. This folder will remain for the duration your are logged in to Verizon Webmail.
To set specific parameters of your search, click the circle with the cross in it (shown on the left of the search field above). The option dialogue will expand, as illistrated in the diagram on the right above. When you have made your choices, close the options selector by clicking on the circle again.
The folder list consists of System folders and custom folders. Custom folders, as the name implies, can be edited, deleted, and nested within other folders. System folders cannot be renamed, moved, or deleted. When you select a folder, the Message List will update with the currently selected folder's contents.
Folders provide a way to organize your messages. The number of unread messages is displayed beside any folder unless all messages are read. There are five system, or default, folders and while you cannot delete, rename or move system folders, you may create as many additional custom folders as you like.
The Inbox is the original folder for all incoming messages. The Inbox icon will change if a new message has been received since you last viewed your Inbox.
The Drafts folder contains copies of messages that you have begun but have not yet sent. To save a message to the drafts folder, click the Save As Draft button when you are composing a message.
If you choose to save copies of outgoing messages, they will be kept in the Sent folder. Select whether or not to save outgoing message by checking the box on the Preferences tab pane of the Settings panel.
Messages are moved to the Junk folder under any of the following conditions:
The Trash folder contains deleted messages until you permanently remove them.
To create a folder, click the New Folder button (folder icon with +) at the bottom of the Mail panel. A new folder icon will appear with a text field labeled Untitled. Type the name that you wish to give to the new folder.
All custom folders are created at the same level. Once you have created a new folder, drag and drop the folder into another folder to create a subfolder.
To delete a folder, highlight the folder by clicking on it and either click the Delete Folder icon (folder icon with -) or press the DELETE key.
You can sort messages by the From, Subject, Date or Size field. Click the column header that you want to sort by. The messages will be redisplayed accordingly. To reverse the sort order, for example, from Z to A, click the field again.
To move messages among folders, highlight the message or message that you wish to move and drag it to the destination folder while holding down the left mouse button. Release the button to drop it into the destination folder.
The toolbar pictured above is common to the Inbox and custom folders, and is used to perform standard operations on incoming email messages, such as creating a new email message.
Verizon Webmail provides a number of quick ways to create a new email message:
When you create a new message, a window is displayed, as shown to the right, with To, Subject, and content fields. After you have filled them in, you can click Send or Save as Draft.
Verizon Webmail supports mulitple compose and read windows. You can compose multiple messages at once.
There are two ways to enter an email address in the to, cc, or bcc fields: by typing in an email address or using the address book.
Type in the email address using a standard syntax. For example:

If an email address already exists in your address book, Verizon Webmail will present you with a list of suggestions based on the partial email address that you have typed. You can select an address from the auto-suggest list using the mouse or keyboard.

Note that you can use Shift-Click to select a range of contacts or use the CTRL/CMND key to select a number of individual contacts.
The toolbar contains a button that toggles between Rich Text and Plain Text message composition. The default state when composing a new message is plain text editing. In this mode the Rich Text Composition toolbar is hidden and the button displays the words Rich Text. Clicking the Rich Text button will display the formatting toolbar and permit text, color and styles to be specified on the message text. The button will toggle the display between plain and rich ext. Selecting plain text while in rich text mode will display an alert warning you that this action will discard any formatting and offer to cancel the action.
Rich text editing is a standard part of composing a new message. This allows you to format messages with a wide variety of styles, fonts and colors.
Here is a list of the different types of formatting that you can do in Verizon Online Mail:
Select SpellCheck in the Toolbar to perform a spell check when composing an email message. This will replace the Rich Text Editing composition bar with the SpellCheck Bar. Utilize SpellCheck for any message that you are composing. Note that when in use it disables the message body, graying out all correctly spelled words and highlighting all misspellings. The "current" misspelled word is highlighted in bold blue and shown in the SpellCheck bar. Other misspellings are shown in bold red. You have the option of replacing the word with the first suggestions (in the drop-down), selecting an alternate suggestion, ignoring the word, or clicking Learn to add the highlighted word to your personal dictionary.
To send an attachment, click the Attach button. A dialog box appears where you may select one or more files to attach to your message.
You can include a pre-defined "signature" with each message you write. To include a signature, click the Insert Signature button. You can define as many signatures as you like. See Preferences for instructions on how to create signatures.
To forward an email message, click the Forward button and enter the recipient or recipients, or select from your contacts. See Contacts.
Select a message you wish to print and click the Print icon in the toolbar.
The Junk button will move the selected message(s) to the Junk folder.
To delete a message, either click the delete (trash bin) button when the message is highlighted, or drag it to the Trash folder. Deleted messages stay in the Trash folder until you either click the delete icon while the message is selected, or until you empty the trash by clicking the empty trash button.
All incoming mail goes to your Inbox folder.
The leftmost column in the folder pane indicates whether you have read, responded to or forwarded a message. If the message is unread, the envelope flap is in the sealed position and the message is in bold text. If the message is read, the envelope flap is in the open position. If you have replied to a message, the envelope icon is replaced by a left-pointing arrow, the reply icon.
The envelope flap is in the sealed position, and it remains that way until you reply to it, or until you click another message.
When you receive a message that has an attachment, a paper clip icon will appear in the column to the left of the From field. In the header of the message there will a line that gives the name of the file, including filename extension, that is attached to the message.
To access the attachment, click it. When the attachment is an image, such as
a file with a
.png extension, a new browser window will appear with
the image displayed in it. If the file is an executable (
extension) or an unrecognized file type, a dialog box will appear, allowing you
to save the file.
Verizon Webmail supports threaded messages sent as RFC attachments. These
attachments are shown in a Verizon Webmail message as a link with the extension
.eml. There is no limit to the number of levels a thread may have.
Controls are provided to allow you to navigate up one level or go back to the
first level of the message.
You can control how frequently Verizon Webmail automatically checks for new incoming messages. Options range from every minute to hourly.
To force an immediate check for new mail, click the Check Mail button in the toolbar.
To manage preferences, click the Preferences button in the lower left of the webtop. The following settings may be modified:
You can set your Junk filtering options to perfrom the following operations in incoming mail that has already been identified as junk:
If you do not want to receive mail from a particular person, add their email
address to this list. If you do not want to receive email from an entire
company, add their domain name (eg.
badspammer.com) to this list.
To accept email from that person or company again, just remove their address
from this list by clicking Unblock.
Mail from these domains/addresses is placed in your Junk folder, unless the
sender is on your allow list. As an example, a you can set up a block list that
address.com. This would ordinarily result in all mail from
address.com domain being put in your Junk folder. However, if
the you also have the address
firstname.lastname@example.org in your allow
list, and an email from that address is received, it will arrive in your inbox.
The Allow List is used in conjunction with the Block Sender List. Together, these lists help manage the filtering out of junk and other unwanted emails. The Allow List bypasses entries in the Block Sender List.
For example, all emails can be blocked coming from the domain acme.com; however, emails from email@example.com would be received in the Inbox if she were in the Allow List.
You can create as many distinct signatures as you like to use in different types of messages. For example, you might have one signature that you use on professional correspondence and another for personal letters. To create a signature, type the name you wish to associate with the signature in the left panel, and the contents of the signature in the preview pane. The name of the signature does not appear in the message; it's just a way for you to order your signatures.
When you have specified one or more signatures, a signature selection menu appears at the bottom of the compose message window. By default, your default signature will be included, however, use this menu to select alternative signatures.
Filters, sometimes called rules, can be accessed via the Filters tab in preferences. Filters are a set of conditions and actions that you can create to process and organize incoming messages. You can add a new filter or set an existing filter to be active (or not). Filters can also be duplicated or deleted.
Each filter consists of two parts: one or more conditions that specify which messages the filter applies to, and one or more actions that specify what should be done with messages that meet the criteria. For example, you can create a rule that automatically moves all of the messages you receive with the subject emerald to a separate folder called Emerald Mailing List.
Contacts provides a summary view of all contacts displaying the first name, last name, and default email address. You may also define groups that appear in the Contacts list. Selecting a contact or group allows the you to either compose a new message or view the respective details.
There are a number of ways to create a new entry in your contacts list:
When you create a new contact, a panel with several sections appears. Fill in the information you wish to save for the contact.
Additional fields can be created for storing information beyond the default fields provided. For instance, fields for additional telephone numbers may be created. Click the + next to Phone. A new field under Phone is created with a blank label. Label as approprate and enter your information. New fields may be created under any of the categories with the + icon. User created fileds may be removed by clicking the - icon.
Click Save to save the information; click Close to dismiss the screen.
To close without saving the information you've just entered, either click on the Cancel button in the lower right of the panel.
You can choose to have your contacts listed alphabetically by first name, last name, or email address. Click the Sort selector panel. Similarly you can choose forward or reverse alphabetical order.
Contacts can be deleted one by one or as a block. Select the contacts you wish to remove by clicking an individual contact, or holding the Shift key to select a range of contacts or the Ctrl/Cmd key to select a number of individual contacts. Once selected, click the Delete button in the footer of the Contacts sidebar.
To find a name in your contact list, type in the Search field. The list of contacts will shrink until it uniquely matches the name you have typed in. You can type in any unique string -- first name, last name, or email address.
To reset the string and bring back the full contact list, use the backspace key to erase the string you have typed. Note: Be sure to use the keyboard to delete the search string. That resets the contact list. If you use the right click menu to cut the string the list will not reset.
Click the New Group icon in the footer of your contacts list and a panel will appear to allow you to populate with people from your address book or simply add an address manually. To add contacts to a group:
