NEWARK, N.J. -- The Newark Public Library today will accept a $15,000
information technology grant from Bell Atlantic - New Jersey.

The library will use the gift to install a computer kiosk in Newark's
Gateway Center office complex. The kiosk will provide users with online
access to the library's reference resources.

The grant was presented by Bell Atlantic - New Jersey President and CEO
William M. Freeman during a late afternoon ceremony at the library's main
building on Washington Square.

Freeman lauded the Newark Public Library for its creativity in reaching
people who might not be able to visit a library during business hours.

"The new computer kiosk will bring the resources of the library into the
workplace," Freeman said. "The book collections and databases of the
Newark Public Library no longer will end at the front door. They'll be able
to go anywhere Bell Atlantic technology will take them."

The grant to the Newark Public Library is one of six -- totaling nearly
$100,000 -- Bell Atlantic has awarded to New Jersey libraries that will use
telecommunications technology to reach more people.

The grant program is part of Access New Jersey, the company's multi-
million dollar initiative to provide the state's schools and libraries with
access to cutting-edge voice, video and data networks.

Libraries seeking grants submitted proposals to the New Jersey Library
Association in March. Applicants explained how they would use high-
speed telecommunications technology to broaden access to their collections
and databases. Bell Atlantic announced the grant winners in April at the
association's annual conference.

Bell Atlantic -- formed through the merger of Bell Atlantic and NYNEX --
is at the forefront of the new communications, information and
entertainment industry. With more than 41 million telephone access lines
and 6.7 million wireless customers worldwide, Bell Atlantic companies are
premier providers of advanced wireline voice and data services, market
leaders in wireless services and the world's largest publishers of directory
information. Bell Atlantic companies are also among the world's largest
investors in high-growth global communications markets, with operations
and investments in 23 countries.
