BEDMINSTER, NJ -- To meet the increasing demand for wireless data
connectivity, Bell Atlantic Mobile today announced that it will use Aeris
Communications' MicroBurstTM technology for short-burst data applications throughout its cellular network. MicroBurst is a low cost
solution for wireless data and messaging that enables a wide range of
telemetry applications including Automated Vehicle Location (AVL),
Automated Meter Reading (AMR) and remote monitoring of security
alarms and other devices. Aeris and Bell Atlantic Mobile will begin to offer
commercial service immediately throughout Bell Atlantic Mobile's
extensive East Coast network.
Bell Atlantic Mobile will add the Aeris MicroBurst service to its
AirBridge® wireless data services portfolio, which already boasts a solid
line-up of commercial solutions. "Our customers don't come to us asking
for technology, but for practical, cost-effective business applications," said
Bill Davidson, vice president of wireless data sales and marketing for Bell
Atlantic Mobile. "Our agreement with Aeris fits well with our strategy to
build a broad backbone of wireless data technologies to provide customers
with the right application at the right price. MicroBurst complements our
strong presence in the wireless data market and provides a cost-effective
solution for lower bandwidth applications."
"We are pleased to work with Bell Atlantic Mobile, a key innovator of
wireless messaging, to deliver telemetry services to the broad range of
markets that need an alternative to higher bandwidth services," said Dick
Gossen, president and CEO of Aeris. "With Bell Atlantic Mobile's
extensive presence on the East Coast, we are well on our way to setting
MicroBurst as the North American standard for short-packet data and
messaging."
Bell Atlantic Mobile's selection of MicroBurst for short-burst data
applications will add more than 57 million POPs to the Aeris network,
extending MicroBurst's reach to nearly 60 percent of U.S. licensed cellular
service areas. This agreement moves Aeris significantly closer to realizing
a seamless North American footprint for MicroBurst, which already covers
100 percent of Canada.
How MicroBurst Works
MicroBurst is a proprietary utility that enables short RAAMTM (Remote
Access Application Message) data packets to be transmitted over control
channels in cellular networks using standard signaling mechanisms. These
short data packets are transmitted by cellular devices and are routed to the
Aeris central hub facility over existing SS#7 (Signaling System 7)
networks. The Aeris hub identifies the service provider, the ultimate
recipient for the RAAM packet data, and routes the data for delivery via a
back-end link, which includes Internet, dial-up and dedicated connectivity.
MicroBurst provides ubiquity of service and the lowest possible cost
structure. All data distribution is handled by Aeris' central clearinghouse
facility. This distribution strategy makes MicroBurst fully mobile and
enables all MicroBurst devices to easily roam nationwide.
