JAMES W. AKERHIELM IS NAMED VICE PRESIDENT
FOR BELL ATLANTIC NYNEX MOBILE SOUTHEAST
REGION


GREENVILLE, SC -- James W. Akerhielm has been named vice president
of
Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile's Southeast Region. Akerhielm will be
responsible for sales, marketing, customer services, network systems
expansion, finance, and administration in the region, which includes
both North and South Carolina.

Akerhielm replaces Jack Plating, who was named president of Bell
Atlantic NYNEX Mobile's New England/Upstate New York region in
September. Akerhielm will be located in the company's regional
headquarters in Greenville.

Prior to his new appointment, Akerhielm served as executive
director--network planning for the company since 1994, developing
strategies and implementing plans for the evolution of the Bell
Atlantic NYNEX Mobile regional networks.

"Jim brings an outstanding track record and reputation for
accomplishment to his new assignment," said Cynthia White, executive
vice president and chief operating officer for Bell Atlantic NYNEX
Mobile.

"He managed an organization of more than 40 technical managers and
is
familiar with every aspect of our long-range strategy from the
creation of new cellular services to the development of technologies
that support those services. We feel his background and training make
him the ideal person to continue our expansion in this fast growing
market." Akerhielm will be supervising more than 570 employees in
the
Southeast region.

Akerhielm began his career in the telecommunications industry in 1986
as a network planning engineer with Bell of Pennsylvania and
subsequently served in a variety of customer service, operations and
sales positions with that organization before joining Bell Atlantic
NYNEX Mobile in 1993 as director of the company's northern New Jersey
network.

Akerhielm graduated summa cum laude in 1986 with a bachelor of science
degree from Lafayette College where he was a member of both the Phi
Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi Honor Societies. He earned an executive
master of science and engineering degree from the University of
Pennsylvania in 1994.

Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile's Southeast Regional headquarters are
located in Greenville, SC, with corporate headquarters in Bedminster,
NJ The company is the largest wireless service provider on the East
Coast and the second largest provider in the United States. Bell
Atlantic NYNEX Mobile offers a full range of wireless voice, data, and
paging communications solutions to its three million customers in the
Northeast, mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and through a separate subsidiary,
in the Southwest. The company was formed in July 1995 through a
combination of Bell Atlantic Mobile's and NYNEX Mobile's cellular
operations. The new company has more than 5,000 employees.
