Bell Atlantic Responds to AT&T Request For Ad Investigation in Pennsylvania
AT&T Complaining about Ads Represents 'Height of Hypocrisy'

BACKGROUND - -- AT&T today asked the Pennsylvania Attorney General to investigate two Bell Atlantic ads that appeared recently in the Harrisburg Patriot-News. The following is Bell Atlantic's response:
"Bell Atlantic stands by its advertising. We believe the Public Utility Commission issued an order that is not in Pennsylvanians' best interests, and we have made our position plainly known.
"It's stupefying that AT&T would complain about these ads with a straight face, given the two-year smear campaign it has waged against Bell Atlantic in Pennsylvania through its front group Pennsylvanians for Local Competition - a campaign that has sought to disparage Bell Atlantic in every conceivable turn. This group, which is funded by the long-distance/cable giant, has run a full-fledged media campaign - print, radio, TV and Internet advertising, as well as sponsorships of radio and TV talk shows - filled with misleading, unsubstantiated claims and allegations, and outright lies about Bell Atlantic.
"Its complaint in Pennsylvania represents the height of hypocrisy."
