NEW YORK -- Bell Atlantic announced today that Al Binford, president and CEO of Bell Atlantic Long Distance, will leave the company March 29 to become senior vice president for customer service delivery and operations at Intermedia Communications, Inc.
"It can only be disappointing to see an executive of Al's caliber leave Bell Atlantic," said Bell Atlantic President and COO James G. Cullen. "He's done an outstanding job in putting together a comprehensive plan, a competitive product line and a first-rate long distance team. We now have an organization that knows what customers want and is ready to deliver it to them. Al will truly be missed."
Binford joined Bell Atlantic in 1994, and in 1995 assumed responsibility for planning the company's entrance into long distance.
Binford said, "There is never a good time to leave a good company. But this is a hot market full of compelling opportunities, and I just couldn't resist this one. I'll always appreciate how supportive Bell Atlantic has been of me, particularly in this decision, given that long distance entry is finally right around the corner. I'm able to leave knowing that the long distance team is in great shape and ready to do battle."
Bell Atlantic will name Binford's replacement shortly.
