In an era where mobile technology constantly evolves, foldable phones are redefining the way we interact with our devices. Combining practicality, innovation and sheer wow factor, these devices are quickly becoming a staple for tech enthusiasts. I recently sat down with Nils Dahl, Director of Product and Technology Planning at Samsung to discuss the game-changing potential of folding smartphones, their real-world applications and what’s next in this exciting space.
Revolutionizing everyday life
Samsung’s foldable devices like the Galaxy Z Flip6 and Galaxy Z Fold6 are more than just engineering marvels—they’re tools that enhance how we live, work and create. One standout feature? The camera functionality. With the Galaxy Z Flip6, users can take high-quality selfies using the main 50-megapixel camera, thanks to the innovative cover screen.
“It’s like having a portable professional camera,” Dahl shared. Gone are the days of awkwardly asking strangers to take a group photo; the built-in tripod functionality of foldables makes it easier than ever.
These phones also cater to nostalgia. Users are rediscovering the joy of recording videos, camcorder-style, by partially folding the phone for a sturdy grip. Whether documenting family memories or shooting creative content, the foldable design adds a touch of vintage charm.
Practicality meets design
Foldable devices solve one of modern smartphones’ biggest challenges: portability. When closed, the Galaxy Z Flip6 offers the compact size of early-generation phones but unfolds to reveal a spacious 6.8-inch display. “Jeans haven’t caught up with phone sizes, but foldables solve that problem,” Dahl quipped. For the Galaxy Z Fold6, it’s about versatility. It transitions seamlessly between a pocket-friendly device and a full tablet-like experience, perfect for multitasking on the go.
Additionally, foldables provide unmatched durability. “The main display is protected when the phone is closed, making it ideal for people with active lifestyles,” Dahl explained. Even his father, an avid DIYer, appreciates the device for its resilience during hands-on projects.
Boosting productivity and creativity
Samsung’s foldables shine in productivity. With large screens and multi-window functionality, users can run multiple apps simultaneously—something previously impractical on smaller displays. The Galaxy Z Fold6, for instance, supports an S Pen, enabling users to annotate documents or sketch designs directly on the screen. Features like Samsung DeX also allow users to connect their phone to a monitor and enjoy a desktop-like experience.
On the creative side, innovations like FlexCam make group photos and scenic shots effortless. This AI-powered tool automatically adjusts framing to include both the subjects and the background, ensuring every shot is Instagram-worthy.
Addressing misconceptions
Despite their growing popularity, foldable phones still face skepticism. Durability and bulkiness are common concerns, but Samsung has addressed these with reinforced hinges, premium materials, and thinner designs. Dahl emphasized that foldables are now in their sixth generation, proving their reliability over time.“We’ve tested these devices to withstand 200,000 folds—durability isn’t an issue,” he assured.
A glimpse into the future
Samsung continues to push the boundaries of what foldables can do. The integration of AI promises to elevate user experiences, from meeting note transcription to generative artwork creation. “Sketch-to-image is one of my favorite features,” Dahl shared. “You can draw a simple outline, and AI transforms it into a beautiful piece of art.”
For those hesitant to make the leap, the stats speak volumes. Dahl highlighted that 98% of Z Flip users and 96% of Z Fold users stick with foldables for their next device. “Once you try it, you’re hooked,” he said, coining the phrase #FoldForLife.
