NEAR THE SPEED OF LIGHT is the next installment in the Visceral Science series, designed and created by the World Science Festival. The experience is an asymmetric crossplay where a team of mobile players competes against outsized opponents in virtual reality. This VR+mobile application combines academic concepts with eSports potential. On one side, a class-size team of mobile players flies a swarm of shuttles at different fractions of the speed of light, experiencing a wide range of relativistic effects. On the other side, one or two VR opponents aim to stop mobile players from achieving their goal of collecting all the stars from the playfield. The application helps students to witness a range of relativistic phenomena such as the Relativistic Doppler Effect, the Headlight Effect, Lorentz Contraction, and the Relativity of Simultaneity. In addition to mobile devices, the experience can also be played using its browser version.
