While both pretty much do the same, the primary different is your mobile hotspot, is when it takes your mobile data and then broadcasts it like a Wi-Fi signal. This is specifically designed for light web surfing and not really extensive as using your phone while your hotspot is active will cause the speeds to slow down as it has to divide between both your phone and whatever device is connected to it. *Kris
