Verizon Fios 5 Gig FAQs

The Verizon Fios 5 Gig internet plan delivers our fastest internet to your home using our 100% fiber optic network, with average wired speeds between 4.5 to 5.3 Gbps for both upload and download.  It’s future-ready for the most demanding connected homes.

Key capabilities:

• Unleash the full potential of your home network with the Verizon Router and the 5 Gig plan:
• Symmetrical speeds for equally fast uploads and downloads.
• Fast, reliable Wi-Fi coverage.
• Compatibility with multiple Verizon routers that support Gig+ speeds, built-in security, parental controls and more.
  • Verizon Router (CR1000A / CR1000B) uses Tri-Band Wi-Fi 6E.
  • Wi-Fi Access Point (CHR30A)* uses Wi-Fi 7 technology.
    • Automatically connects your device to the fastest and least crowded network band - ideal for households with many connected devices.
• When you set up your Fios service yourself, our Wi-Fi Health Check tool automatically monitors the connection strength between your router and devices 30 days after activation. If the tool detects signal issues, we email you to confirm shipment of a free Verizon Wi-Fi Extender or Wi-Fi Access Point.

Internet performance scales based on your household's total device volume and data consumption. The table below illustrates how different tiers compare.

5 Gig comparison:

Good to know: Availability varies. 5 Gig network to your home. Wired and wireless speeds vary due to device limits, multiple users, network & other factors. See verizon.com/yourspeed for more info.

The minimum device specifications for Fios Internet are:

Windows

• Windows 10 or higher
• 2 GHz processor
• 4 GB RAM
• Native Gigabit Ethernet port or USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet adapter.

Mac

• OSX 10.12 or higher
• Intel Core i7 CPU at 2.5 GHz or higher
• 16 GB RAM
• Native Gigabit Ethernet connection or a Thunderbolt 5 Gigabit Ethernet adapter.

Generally, devices meeting the above criteria will see exceptional performance on a 5 Gig Connection. To run a speed test on a single device, ensure your device meets the recommended criteria:

Recommended device specifications for 5 Gigs are:

Windows

• 64-bit Windows 10 Pro
• Intel Core i7 CPU @ 2.5GHZ or higher Processor
• 32 GB RAM
• 10 Gigabit Ethernet connection or USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter

Mac

• OSX 10.12
• Intel Core i7 CPU @ 2.5GHZ or higher Processor
• 32 GB RAM
• 10 Gigabit Ethernet Connection or Thunderbolt10 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter

The Verizon Router and Wi-Fi Access Point support 5 Gig.

For complete information and specs, review the Wi-Fi Access Point User Guide. The speed on a Wi-Fi connection depends on the Wi-Fi standard your device supports. As a general guideline, maximum theoretical speeds supported by the existing Wi-Fi standards are:

The following applies to the Verizon Router (CR1000A & CR1000B) and the Wi-Fi Access Point (CHR30A):

• 2.4 GHz
  • IEEE 802.11b/g/n maximum up to 600 Mbps
  • IEEE 802.11ax maximum up to 1.1 Gbps
• 5 GHz
  • IEEE 802.11a/n/ac maximum up to 2.2 Gbps
  • IEEE 802.11ax maximum up to 2.4 Gbps
• 6 GHz
  • IEEE 802.11ax maximum up to 4.8 Gbps

The following only applies to the Wi-Fi Access Point (CHR30A):

• MLO enabled
  • IEEE 802.11be maximum up to 46 Gbps

Technical Tip: Unsure which standard your hardware uses? Check your device's documentation or contact the manufacturer directly. Legacy 802.11a/b/g equipment can degrade performance for your entire wireless network; we recommend disconnecting these older devices entirely.

A router speed test measures the speed the Verizon network delivers to your home router. To test your 5 Gig speed, visit verizon.com/SpeedTest and run a router speed test. You run the speed test with either a wired or wireless connection.

If you order 5 Gig with a same-day due date, Verizon takes a few hours to activate your service. Wait until the end of the day before you test your 5 Gig speed.

For the best possible speed, make sure you:

• Meet or exceed the recommended system requirements.
• Use a compatible router, such as the Wi-Fi Access Point (CHR30A) and the Verizon Router (CR1000A and CR1000B).
• Connect to the router using a wired 5 Gig Ethernet Connection.
• Avoid battery power by plugging into a power source and disabling power-saving profiles.
• Use the latest version of your web browser to prevent processing delays.
• Pause security software, such as firewalls or anti-malware, which can interfere with data transmission speeds.
• Restart all security software immediately after the test is complete to keep your device protected.

Good to know:  If your device doesn’t meet the recommended specifications for a Fios 5 Gig, it’s likely you won’t see your subscribed internet speed when running a device test. As higher-speed products like Fios 5 Gig become available, your device’s capability to support these high-capacity speeds becomes critical.

Also, when running a speed test on a Wi-Fi device, you are testing the speed of your Wi-Fi network, not the broadband speed delivered by Fios 5 Gig.

Your Wi-Fi speed can be affected by your surroundings, including walls, distance from your router, and electronics like microwaves or baby monitors.

To get the strongest signal:

• Centralize your router: Place it in the room where you use the internet most.
• Clear the path: Keep the router out in the open, away from walls, large furniture, and other electronics.
• Update older tech: Disconnect very old devices (like those using 802.11b) as they can slow down your entire network.
• Plug in for speed: For tasks that require the fastest possible connection (like gaming or large downloads), use an Ethernet cable to plug directly into the router.
