5 ways the GizmoGadget smartwatch dials up peace of mind for parents

A wearable designed with parents in mind.

The LG GizmoGadget is a smartwatch that allows kids to call and text caregivers — without having to take on the responsibility and expense of a smartphone. Equipped with built-in GPS tracking and limited smartphone functionality, it was named a PC Magazine Editors’ Choice.

1. Control of contacts

Once parents download the GizmoGadget companion application, they input the call and text numbers of the individuals allowed to interact with the child. When the watch receives a call or text, parents are alerted on their own devices.

2. Clear boundaries

Using the app, parents establish the perimeter in which the child is allowed to roam, providing priceless peace of mind. Simply tap the “Search” icon in the app to pinpoint the watch’s exact location. If a child wanders outside the set boundary, a parent will receive an immediate alert. “Would you like more peace of mind by being able to know where your child is at all times?” asks the website Chip Chick in a product review. “LG and Verizon have teamed up to give you the perfect gadget in the GizmoGadget smartwatch.”

3. Tailored messaging

When sending a text, kids have the option of using emoji, a brief audio message or one of nine predetermined messages. Children and parents can work together to create these messages, which are limited to 30 characters - good training for future tweeting.

4. Fun and games

Voice recordings are limited to 20 seconds, but give kids the ability to distort their voices. Parents may be surprised when they receive a call from a son or daughter sounding remarkably like Darth Vader, wanting to know if Jonah can come over to play. “Verizon loaned my family an LG GizmoGadget Watch to review for a month,” writes a reviewer on the parenting website Toys in the Attic. “Our month ended a few days ago, and this weekend we’re off to the store to buy one to keep! I honestly can’t imagine life without it now."

5. Fitness tracking

Other kid-friendly features include a timer with countdown functions, compass, stopwatch, a “to-do” list and three different backgrounds for displaying the time. “Plus it counts steps and even jumps made with a jump rope,” the website Digital Trends notes in its product review.

Other good news for parents is that the watch is robust and waterproof to one meter for up to 30 minutes. “It is durable enough for the roughest of play,” states BabyGizmo in its product review. “Plus, it’s waterproof,* so hand washing, water balloon fights and day-to-day splashes are all good.”
