Pick the right fitness bands for the fitness fans on your gift list

Getting back into shape or getting into even better shape continues to occupy top spots on New Year's resolutions. If your family members or friends are making that commitment, help them meet their goals by giving them a fitness band as a holiday present. Discover some key features of the wearable tech spotlighted today to help you match the gift with the person on your list.

Great gift for the beginning exerciser:

Fitbit Alta HR. This Fitbit provides features like logging steps taken, calories burned and sleep quality. Then, the Fitbit Alta HR tops them off with the addition of continuous, automatic heart rate monitoring during exercise and at rest. Its battery lasts a full week between charges – “impressive when you consider the added heart rate sensors,” reports The Verge. To stay motivated, users can get reminders to move to reach an hourly goal of 250 steps, tap the OLED display for a view into their stats or use the Fitbit app for activities insights. To have fun, they can customize the Fitbit Alta HR’s look by swapping out its slim, bracelet-style elastomer wristband for other choices in materials like leather and metal (sold separately).

Great gift for the techno-enthusiast exerciser:

Fitbit Blaze. Clockface information like date and time and fitness data such as heart rate and steps can appear on the high-resolution color touchscreen display of this simple smart fitness watch that syncs wirelessly to more than 200 devices. The Fitbit Blaze builds on the company’s reputation in the fitness band space with an even higher level of tracking. That includes heart rate monitoring that measures heart pulse and also heart rate zones to assess exercise intensity; automatic exercise recognition; easy recording of sports like biking, running and weight-lifting; and streaming exercises and customized video workouts right to users’ wrists. “It’s an accurate and reliable tracker, and the color screen is great for displaying the useful new FitStar workouts,” PCMag writes. Firmware updates with new clockface designs and interchangeable bands add to the customization choices, too.

Great gift for the multi-faceted exerciser:

Fitbit Charge 2. For users who would enjoy getting more value out of the range of exercise activities they like to pursue, this heart rate and fitness wristband is a good fit. It offers some of the advanced fitness features of the Fitbit Blaze, like continuous pulse and heart rate zone monitoring, automatic exercise recognition and multi-sport tracking. The heart rate and fitness wristband also chimes in with reminders to move and leverages users’ heart rate information to inform guided breathing sessions that can help bring more calm to the day. The water-resistant Fitbit Charge 2 “looks like a well-specced wearable,” according to TechRadar.

Great gift for committed exercisers:

Garmin vivosmart 3. This fitness wristband with an OLED display is waterproof for swimming and post-gym showering and also sturdy enough in silicon casing to handle a bit of a beating during tough workouts without sacrificing a light, slim design. It identifies exercise activities and counts workout reps, too, and calculates users’ fitness score and fitness age based on their estimated VO2 Max level. More competitive exercisers can compare their VO2 Max figures to those of their friends, to see how they measure up. The vivosmart 3 uses heart rate tracking to estimate stress levels and provide users with guided breathing exercises. “The water-resistance alone is a strong differentiator, and features such as the all-day stress level are also welcome inclusions,” writes TrustedReviews.
