You might know the heartbreak of dropping your phone and cracking its screen. That was the pain Motorola's engineers wanted to tackle head on. Namely, make a phone screen that could withstand impact and the occasional fall.
"There's a fundamental flaw in the design of smartphones, and that's that they have a large piece of glass on the front of them," says Jason Wojack, vice president of engineering and product architecture for Motorola. "Shatterproof was an audacious challenge and we wanted to take it on and tackle it."
To accomplish that goal, engineers created Moto ShatterShield™—five layers including interior and exterior protective lenses and an aluminum chassis that are built into the phone to absorb shock, preventing the display from cracking or shattering.
The result? The Droid Turbo 2 is the world’s first smartphone with a display that’s guaranteed not to crack or shatter for four years.
“The wow moment for this device is going to be when [people] drop the phone” and the screen doesn’t break, says Motorola designer Marcello Zuffo.
